Biography
Adriaan "Ad" Dekkers was a prominent Dutch sculptor born on March 21, 1938, in Nieuwpoort, South Holland. He is best known for his minimalist reliefs and sculptures that emphasize simple geometric forms. Dekkers studied at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, where he initially focused on drawing landscapes and still lifes. However, in the early 1960s, he shifted his focus from painting to creating reliefs, primarily using plastic materials. Dekkers' work gained international recognition during the 1960s, with his pieces being featured in major exhibitions such as the Biennale de Paris in 1965, the São Paulo Art Biennial in 1967, and documenta in Kassel in 1968. His minimalist approach and innovative use of materials made him a leading figure in the field of geometric abstraction. Dekkers' works were also showcased in numerous solo exhibitions across the Netherlands and were later included in museum collections in several countries, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, England, and the United States. Tragically, Ad Dekkers' life was cut short when he passed away on February 27, 1974, in Gorinchem. Despite his brief career, his contributions to the art world have left a lasting impact, and his works continue to be celebrated for their clarity and precision.
