Albert Rouiller
Born 1938
Albert Rouiller was born in Geneva on March 25, 1938 and died in 2000. Fascinated at an early age by boats, the lake, the sea, he spent most of his time on the docks, not hesitating to retype or repaint boats to get some pocket money. Between 1953 and 1958, he attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts (Graduate School of Fine Arts / HES) of Geneva (he enters preparatory class to fifteen years) while working at the same time on building sites as maneuver, mason then to a marble worker who teaches him to master the size of the letters on the funeral monuments. At the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, he attended the sculpture classes of Henri Koenig and Max Weber, while he began to mold and plaster work with Georges Pougnier at the School of Decorative Arts in Geneva. In 1958, he decided to devote himself exclusively to sculpture. Winner of several scholarships (cantonal and federal) between the years 58 and 66 and Second National Prize for sculpture in 1968 (awarded to Gambarogno in Ticino), Albert Rouiller still has his eyes riveted towards the sea. He thus sets the course, in 1959, on Ibiza (Balearic Islands) where he relaxes for six months. Back in the country in 1960, he set up his workshop in his grandfather's garden in Chêne-Bougeries (Geneva). It is the time when he cuts his first large stone sculptures and begins to participate in many competitions. In 1961, he married Monique Gay, an interior designer he met at the School of Decorative Arts in Geneva and gave him two sons: Yvan, born in 1962 and Jan, in 1965. In 1962, he bought an old farm in Soral (Geneva). With his wife, he removes, transforms and installs his studio. From then on, he will continue to work on monumental works with personal or collective exhibitions, both in Switzerland and abroad. The plastic and pictorial research pursued by Albert Rouiller led him to use materials as different as marble, granite, bronze, aluminum, steel and several types of wood. Parallel to the sculpture, the artist built over the years a comic work complementary to the research carried out in three dimensions. Always, naturally, in filigree of his work of visual artist, nourishing really this last one: the sea. The boats and the dream of living on an island. This passion brings him closer and more often and surely to the Mediterranean where, in 1980, Albert Rouiller made the leap and embarked on a new adventure. With Monique, he acquires, repairs and enlarges a small traditional country house, near the village of Portocolom, sixty kilometers from Palma de Mallorca, thus sharing its existence and its creation between Geneva and the Balearic Islands.
