Alfredo Ramos Martínez
Born 1871
Alfredo Ramos Martínez was a Mexican painter known for his stylized depictions of farmers, Zapatistas, and floral still lifes. Martínez notably painted a number of his works upon newspapers, often allowing the text to show through in places. Born on November 12, 1871 in Monterrey, Mexico, he won a scholarship at the age of 14 to attend the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. Despite his early success, Martínez was compelled to leave his home and travel to France, so he could immerse himself in the culture of the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. During his time there, he also traveled to the Netherlands where he studied the paintings of both Rembrandt van Rijn and Vincent van Gogh. The artist quickly adopted techniques popularized by the Impressionists and received acclaim from critics and peers. After his return to Mexico in 1910, the artist opened a school for plein-air painting, which was attended by among others, David Alfaro Siqueiros and Rufino Tamayo. For reasons related to the health of his daughter, Martínez and his family moved to Los Angeles, where he produced both a number of murals and paintings in style influenced by pre-Columbian art. The artist died on November 8, 1946 in Los Angeles, CA. Today, his works are held in the collections of the San Diego Museum of Art, the Seattle Art Museum, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others.
