Alicja Gaskon
Alicja Gaskon uses lines and maps to tell stories about borders, migration and identity. Her work comes as a result of a deep social analysis and research. The problematics of division, taking into account the philosophical, social and political dimension, became a key point early on in her practice. Gaskon's work has been strongly influenced by her personal observations and experiences of political shifts and immigration. Gaskon studied both architecture and fine arts. Subsequently her focus around the concept of a line and interest in cartography stands from her educational background. By weaving lines in space in installations or using cartographic techniques in painting, the line either connects or divides but it is always present. In the Dividing Lines series the artist specifically addresses the changes happening in the world right now- from borders and social injustices to daily occurrences that come as consequences of past divisions. The work aims to challenge long-held beliefs and stereotypes that have been shown to remain from five and to up to ten generations forward. The work explores these issues and looks at the problematics of personal and national identity. The artist often uses mapping as a narrative tool to investigate socio-political spaces. Military maps, satellite images, and statistical data are later translated into a reduced language that is directly based on the collected information. Gaskon uses a diverse range of techniques and materials, most often working in painting, sculpture, installation, drawing and video. Alicja Gaskon received her M.F.A. from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and is a graduate in Architecture (WSEiZ). She currently lives and works in New York and holds her studio practice at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts. Gaskon has received grants and residencies from the ISCP International Studio and Curatorial Program, NARS Foundation, Asylum Arts, IAM Program at the New York Foundation for the Arts, ArtSlant, StartPoint Prize for Emerging Artists, and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, among others. Gaskon has been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows in Europe and North America, including: Central Museum of Textiles in Lodz, Korean Cultural Center in New York, Galeria Labirynt in Lublin, Lengyel Intézet in Budapest, NARS Foundation in New York, EFA Project Space in New York, Le Guern Gallery in Warsaw, Balzer Projects in Basel, Julius I Ap gallery in Berlin, Artissima in Turin, Vienna Contemporary in Vienna, Noyes Museum of Art in Atlantic City, Saatchi Gallery in London, Times Square in New York (Chashama and Times Square Alliance), among others.
