Antonio Corpora

1909 – 2004 • Italian

Biography

Antonio Corpora was an influential Italian painter born on August 15, 1909, in Tunis to Sicilian parents. He studied at the Tunis Institute of Fine Arts and was mentored by Armand Vergeaud. In 1930, Corpora moved to Paris, where he was exposed to various avant-garde movements. By 1939, he had settled in Rome and became a member of the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti, a post-cubist Italian art movement. Corpora's early work was characterized by abstract and geometric forms, influenced by Cubism and Fauvism. Over time, his style evolved towards abstract expressionism and Tachisme, a European counterpart to American abstract expressionism. His contributions to abstract art were recognized through his participation in the Venice Biennale, where he exhibited four times, including a solo show in 1960. Corpora's work is collected for its dynamic use of color and form, reflecting the broader trends in mid-20th-century European abstract art. He passed away in Rome on September 6, 2004, leaving behind a legacy as a key figure in the development of Italian abstract painting.
