1864 – 1933 • Manx

Biography

Archibald Knox (1864–1933) was a prominent Manx designer known for his significant contributions to the Arts and Crafts Movement, Celtic Revival, Art Nouveau, and Modernism. Born on the Isle of Man, Knox was of Scottish descent and became a leading figure in the Modern Style movement. His work is most closely associated with Liberty & Co., a renowned London department store, where he served as the primary designer during their peak years. Knox's designs for Liberty were primarily featured in their Tudric (pewter) and Cymric (precious metals) ranges, which included a wide array of decorative and functional objects such as silverware, jewellery, and homeware. Knox's designs are celebrated for their innovative blend of traditional Celtic motifs with contemporary Art Nouveau aesthetics, making his work highly collectible. Despite his prolific output, estimated at around 5,000 designs, Knox's name was not widely known during his lifetime as Liberty often kept their designers anonymous. Today, his works are highly sought after by collectors and are considered quintessential examples of early 20th-century design. His legacy is further cemented by his design of the gravestone for Liberty's founder, Arthur Lasenby Liberty, showcasing his versatility and enduring influence in the design world.
