Armando Andrade Tudela was born in Lima in 1975. He studied at the Pontifícia Universidad Católica, Lima, graduating with a BA in fine arts in 1999 before traveling to Europe to continue his education, where he received an MA from the Royal College of Art, London (2003), and acted as a researcher for the Jan Van Eyck Akademie, Maastricht, Netherlands (2004–06). In addition to his work in installation, film, sculpture, and slide projection, Andrade Tudela was associated with Lima-based artists’ collective and exhibition space Espacio La Culpable (2006–08). Espacio La Culpable formed as a reaction to conventional systems of art display and commerce, foregrounding process over product, and providing Lima with a flexible platform for collaboration. One of Andrade Tudela’s earliest works, Camion (2003), exemplifies his interest in form and its relationship to culture, place, and time. After following and photographing trucks on Peruvian highways, the artist produced a slide installation and book that document the hand-painted logos and decorations unique to each vehicle. These look remarkably similar to the cyphers of modernist American abstraction, but are in fact applied at the whim and to the taste of each driver. Rather than just seek visual equivalencies, Andrade Tudela asks how interpretation is affected by context, and how ideas are assimilated according to personal and cultural expectations. Andrade Tudela also presents forms and elements borrowed from architecture. The appropriation of construction material for his sculptures and installations decentralizes its fixed significance as an element of support, reconfiguring it in ways that posit new meanings and relationships. Using materials such as concrete, Plexiglas, and aluminum, Andrade Tudela layers, stacks, and leans material to produce an abstract microcosm of larger architectures and the cultural forces that shape them. Often employing mirrored or reflective surfaces, he encourages viewers to become conscious of their own act of looking and to recognize how localized perspectives impose meaning outward, thus taking his exhibiting and art-making contexts into account. Andrade Tudela has completed residencies with La Cité des Arts, Paris (2002) and the São Paulo Biennial (2006). He has participated in group exhibitions including the Shanghai Biennial (2006); Brave New Worlds, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2007); The Persistence of Geometry, Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (2012); and Constellations, Tate Liverpool (2013). His work was featured in a two-venue exhibition at the Frankfurter Kunstverein, Frankfurt, and Kunsthalle Basel (2008); and in solo presentations at the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (2010) and Museo de Arte de Lima (2012). Andrade Tudela lives and works in Berlin and Saint-Étienne, France.
