Cady Noland

American

Biography

Cady Noland is an American Conceptual artist, known for her interest in the failed ethos of “the American Dream” and how it manifests itself in celebrity culture and everyday life. Her work is often based on personal traumas, which the artist harnesses for the purpose of larger cultural critiques. Through a mixture of sculpture, painting, and installation, Noland attempts to recreate a sense of immobility and fear for the viewer. Born in 1956 in Washington, D.C., she is the daughter of the renowned Color Field painter Kenneth Noland. She was included in the 1991 Whitney Biennial and documenta 9, and has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Paula Cooper Gallery in New York, the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, and De Hallen Haarlem in the Netherlands, among others. Her 1989 work Oozewald set the record for the highest price ever paid for a female artist at Sotheby’s when auctioned for $6.6 million in 2011. Noland lives and works in New York, NY.
