Biography
Cameron Jamie was born in 1969 in Los Angeles. He currently lives and works in Paris. His artistic output encompasses drawing, sculpture, and video, and focuses on underground aspects of the American suburbs. Jamie’s films look at popular rituals and subcultures, and realities born in the margins that form what he himself defines as ‘social theatre’. From brawls between kids to food contests and rituals related to festivities, Jamie’s work reveals the role of small daily mythologies and folkloric rituals in suburban life. His videos are often associated with ethnographic cinema; while making them, Jamie spends part of his time within the communities, integrating himself and forging collaborations. His films are often projected to the accompaniment of live music by The Melvins or the Japanese guitarist Keiji Haino. Exhibitions dedicated to his work include those at Kunsthalle Zürich (2013), Museum of Modern Art, New York (2011), Cineteca National Mexico (2011) and MIT, Massachusetts (2007). His video BB (1998-2000) was included in the exhibition ‘Voice of Images’ (2012-13) at Palazzo Grassi.
