Biography
Chantal Joffe is an American-born British painter whose large-scale paintings bring a uniquely contemporary approach to portraiture. Often focusing on depictions of women, she paints in a loosely gestural and expressive style that often relies on mainstream fashion magazines for source material. “I like the narratives that you get in fashion photography,” the artist explains. “And I like what the clothes do to the body—the patterns and stripes and all of that.” Her technique is at times reminiscent of Alice Neel’s emotional, psychologically probing paintings, and Joffe has cited famed American photographer Diane Arbus as an important influence to her work. Born on October 5, 1969 in St. Albans, VT, she studied at the Glasgow School of Art and completed her MA at the Royal College of Art in London. In 2006, Blonde Girl, Black Dress earned Joffe the coveted Charles Wollaston Award in the Royal Academy summer exhibition. The painting, one of 1,305 entries on display, was the unanimous winner of the “most distinguished work in the exhibition” award. Today, Joffe’s works are in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh, the Royal College of Art in London, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, among others. The artist lives and works in London, United Kingdom.
