After an internship with Neville Brody’s studio in London, Cornel Windlin (*1964) completed his studies under Hans-Rudolf Lutz at Schule für Gestaltung Lucerne in 1988. He returned to work for Brody and became art editor at The Face magazine in 1990, after which he set up his own practice in London. Upon moving to Zurich in 1993, he continued to design posters and publications for Rote Fabrik, Museum für Gestaltung, Kunsthaus Zürich, and a wide array of cultural and commercial clients in Switzerland and abroad.
In 1993, he founded Lineto with Stephan Müller, a long-time friend and early collaborator on type design projects. Five years later, they developed Lineto into a platform for the distribution of fonts, becoming Switzerland’s first online foundry. All of Cornel’s designs were primarily produced for use in his own work, including Moonbase Alpha (1991), LL Alpha Headline and LL Lutz Headline (1992), LL Gravur Condensed and LL Thermo (1996), LL Mono (1997/98), LL Autoscape (1998), LL Vectrex, LL supermax (1999), as well as a number of unpublished designs.
In 1999, Cornel created the identity for Schauspielhaus Zürich under Christoph Marthaler. In 2004, he was hired to define the look for the Vitra Home Collection, art directing and designing three groundbreaking catalogues until 2008. He edited and designed Project Vitra, a meticulously researched, extensive volume about the Swiss furniture company’s history. With Bice Curiger, he conceived TATE ETC. magazine for Tate museums, and designed 21 issues until 2010.
In 1997, he won the newly-established Jan Tschichold Prize and was awarded the first Swiss Grand Prix for Design in 2007. He served on the Swiss Federal Design Commission and presided the jury of the ‘Most Beautiful Swiss Books’ competition for the next four years.
After a much-lauded second spell at Schauspielhaus Zürich (2009–11, with Gregor Huber and later Ivan Sterzinger), Cornel moved to Berlin, increasingly focusing on the development of Lineto and, with Stephan Müller and Andreas Eigendorf, on setting up Alphabet, the type engineering company. Since 2016, he is based in Zürich, where he runs his own art direction & design practice.
