Damir Muratov is one of the leading figures of the Siberian artistic renaissance of the mid-1990s that was largely inspired by the work of Blue Noses group. Although Muratov is overshadowed by the loud and flamboyant Noses (Vyacheslav Mizin, Alexander Shaburov, and friends), he serves as a glue or “humus,” to quote the artist, that brings together the local art scene. Muratov is experimenting, involving new participants and contexts: from the artistic myth of “Siberian separatism” (Siberia is larger than Europe) to painterly variations on the theme of a new Siberian flag and state symbols. Muratov’s most recent works examine the space of Soviet communal memory, as well as individual artifacts of Soviet design. He becomes an eccentric “design artist” who records the absurdity of current events on canvas, cardboard, and paper, reviving the Soviet tradition of illustration, poster design, fonts, and so on.
