Biography
David Thayer Chapple, born in 1947 in Palo Alto, California, is an American artist known for his contemporary oil paintings and sculptures. Before fully dedicating himself to art, Chapple had a brief career in professional football as a punter in the National Football League (NFL) from 1969 to 1975, playing for teams such as the San Francisco 49ers, Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams, and New England Patriots. His transition from sports to art was influenced by his early interest in wildlife painting, which he developed while working as a bird taxidermist at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History during his college years. Chapple's artistic style is influenced by the early California impressionist landscape painters, and he has gained recognition for his wildlife paintings, winning numerous stamp contests for conservation groups and state stamps in California, Kentucky, Utah, and Idaho. His passion for golf has also led to painting commissions for notable figures and events in the sport, including Jack Nicklaus and the U.S. Open. In the 1980s, Chapple expanded into sculpture, receiving commissions from corporations and creating notable works such as a life-size bronze of athlete Florence Griffith Joyner. His works are collected for their vibrant depiction of natural and sporting themes, reflecting his diverse talents and interests.
