Ernestine Tahedl

Biography

Ernestine Tahedl was born and educated in Austria. She graduated with a Master’s Degree in graphic art from the Vienna Academy of Applied Arts in 1961. She collaborated with her father, Professor Heinrich Tahedl, who was a renowned artist in Austria until she immigrated to Canada in 1963. Her studio is in King City, Ontario. Her work is represented in public, corporate and private collections and galleries in Canada, United States, France, Switzerland, Austria, and Japan. She has received many awards in Canada and abroad, some of which included the Queen Elisabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 and Queen Elisabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. She was elected a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1977 and of the Ontario Society of Artists 1984. She received the Governor General’s 125th Anniversary Medal in 1993. She has a deep-rooted connection to Edmonton, where her career in Canada began. She is responsible for several public art features in Edmonton, most notably the mosaics in front of the new Royal Alberta Museum.
