Biography

Eugène de Barberiis is a pupil of Édouard Detaille (1848-1912) and Étienne-Prosper Berne-Bellecour (1838-1910) at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Marseille , his hometown. He lived between Paris, where he was also a student of Tony Robert-Fleury , and Marseille. He is known for his paintings depicting military scenes, his portraits. His search for Mediterranean light will lead him to paint many landscapes and seascapes in Provence. He devotes himself to provencal painting for the last part of his life. He is the friend of Jules Cantini , Jean-Baptiste Olive , Zino Francescatti and Édouard Crémieux . He made a portrait of Joris-Karl Huysmans and collaborated among others in the Collection of One Hundred . Many of his works are preserved at the Museum of Fine Arts in Marseille and at the Cantini Museum [ 1 ] . He lived in Paris at No. 14 rue de Chabrol [ 2 ] .
