Hans Brattrud

Biography

Hans Brattrud is a Norwegian furniture designer best known for his widely imitated Scandia chair design, which combines laminated wood on a pliable wire frame, allowing multiple chairs to be stacked on top of each other for easy storage. Born in 1933 in Norway, he went on to study at the National College of Art and Design in Oslo where he first invented the Scandia chair for a class project in 1957. In 1967, the stackable chair was awarded the gold medal at the International Arts and Crafts Fair in Munich. After early success, Brattrud stopped making furniture in the mid 1960s and shifted his focus to making prefabricated houses. He lives and works in Norway.
