Henry Ryland

1856 – 1924 • British

Biography

Henry Ryland was a British painter, illustrator, and designer born in 1856 in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. He was known for his exquisite watercolour paintings, often depicting young women in classical draperies set against marble terraces. Ryland's work was influenced by the classical revival style popularized by artists such as Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Albert Moore. Although he occasionally painted in oils, his mastery of watercolours distinguished his work, which was frequently reproduced as prints, making it widely accessible. Ryland received his artistic training at the South Kensington Art School and Heatherley's in London, and further honed his skills in Paris under the tutelage of Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant and at the Académie Julian. He exhibited at prestigious venues such as the Grosvenor Gallery, the Royal Academy, and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, where he became a full member. In addition to painting, Ryland designed stained glass and contributed woodcut illustrations to magazines like the English Illustrated Magazine. Henry Ryland's work remains collected for its delicate beauty and technical precision, capturing the serene elegance of classical themes. He passed away in 1924, leaving behind a legacy of refined artistic contributions to the late 19th and early 20th-century British art scene.
