Huang Yong Ping

1954 – 2019 • Chinese

Biography

Huang Yong Ping was a Chinese-French contemporary artist, born on February 18, 1954, in Xiamen, Fujian Province, China. He became a pivotal figure in the Chinese avant-garde movement and was known for his provocative and experimental works that often critiqued cultural and political norms. Huang initially drew inspiration from Western artists like Joseph Beuys, John Cage, and Marcel Duchamp, which influenced his approach to art as a strategic and conceptual practice. In 1982, he graduated from art school in Hangzhou and later founded the Xiamen Dada group in 1986, which emphasized the destruction and reconstruction of art as a form of expression. In 1989, Huang moved to Paris to participate in the 'Magiciens de la terre' exhibition and subsequently settled in France, where he lived until his death on October 20, 2019. His works often incorporated large-scale installations, making them less suitable for traditional auction settings. One of his notable works, 'Serpent d'océan,' is a monumental sculpture installed in the intertidal zone of Saint-Brevin-les-Pins, France. Huang's art is collected for its bold cross-cultural commentary and its ability to challenge and redefine traditional artistic boundaries. He was represented by prominent galleries such as Gladstone Gallery in New York and Kamel Mennour in Paris.
