Born in 1628, de Bisschop was a law student by training, who spent his career as an advocate in The Hague at the Law Court of Holland, but he was also an accomplished amateur artist who had studied with Bartholomeus Breenbergh. He executed a large number of drawings and etchings covering virtually every genre from landscapes, copies after paintings and drawings by the Old Masters, copies after ancient sculpture, and a few original works. He had a passionate interest in Italian classicism and his landscapes often have an Italianate flavour that has led some scholars to wonder if he made a trip to Rome, although there is no firm evidence of this. He was equally devoted to education in the arts and in the years around 1670 he produced two series of prints, the Signorum Veterum Icones (1668–1669) and the Paradigmata Graphices variorum Artificum (1671), which he intended as instruction manuals for young artists. In his turn, he had a great artistic influence on his fellow wealthy amateur Jacob van der Ulft (q.v.), who may have had access to his studio after his death.
