Lee Han-bok
Born 1897 • Korean
He was a Korean calligrapher and educator during the Japanese colonial period. His pen name was Muho (無號), Sujae (壽齋), and his nickname was Lee Bok (李福). He was born in Jeonui, South Chungcheong Province. His pen name was Muho (無號), his initials were Sujae (壽齋), and his epitaph was also written as Lee Bok (李福). He studied traditional painting techniques from Jo Seok-jin and An Jung-sik at a young age, and studied abroad in Japan, entering the Tokyo School of Fine Arts’ Japanese Painting Department in 1918 and graduating in 1923. After returning to Korea, he joined the Calligraphy and Painting Association and participated in the association’s exhibitions from the first in 1921 onwards, exhibiting in the first Joseon Art Exhibition in 1922 and the eighth in 1929. He was also good at calligraphy, and exhibited both calligraphy and paintings in the Joseon Art Exhibition. In 1925, when the Seoul Christian Youth Association (YMCA) was recruiting male and female students for the art department, he took charge of the practical training of the Oriental Painting Department and taught art at several schools in Seoul, including Whimoon School, Boseong School, and Jinmyeong School. In 1940, when the Joseon Art Museum run by Oh Bong-bin held an exhibition of landscape paintings by 10 famous artists, selected through recommendations and discussions by senior calligraphy and painting figures at the time, Lee Han-bok also participated and submitted his works. It is said that he was good at writing in the seal script style of Oh Chang-seok. He was also knowledgeable in appraising ancient books and paintings.
