Biography

Born in 1913 in Holland, Lodewijk Karel Bruckman was a painter, working primarily in oil. Bruckman received his Master of Arts at The Hague Academy of Fine Arts and continued studies in Munich, Florence, Paris and London. He is best known for his genre, still life and portrait paintings and is most famous for his works in the style of magic realism. Bruckman was active in Provincetown, MA from 1953 to the early 1960s as well as in New York City. He often traveled south during the winters, to such locales as Florida, Cuba and Mexico. He opened the Royal Dutch Art Gallery, his summer studio, in Provincetown in 1953. In April 1952 he won the J. Porter Brinton Prize in the New Direction in American Art Exhibition at Grand Central Art Galleries in New York City. Bruckman also exhibited at the Boston Arts Festival and won prizes in both 1953 and 1957. He died in 1980.
