Nelio is like Picasso let loose onto the street with a spray can and a sugar rush. His work blends abstract art, architecture, cubism, graphic design and - the spiritual mother of all street art - the graffiti mural. Continuing to stay true to street arts roots, Nelio uses the humble spray-can to build pieces made of cleanly cut symbols, geometric shapes, letters and sometimes facial features. Along with his other influence of ancient art, the raw shapes are like a mysterious ineffable language, communicating with you like a hieroglyphic or a piece of music. Using playful colors and compositions, his pieces stay far away from the pretension associated with his fine art and architectural influences. But although playful, the work still has a subversive grit, acting as a kick in the teeth to the monotonous grey modern cityscape, were usually the only visual relief comes from billboard trying to sell you something. Some of his pieces also use bits of discarded wood to create three dimension impressions, adding further form and texture to the already exciting and busy visual experience. Many pieces have their individual vibrant color pallet, although even his pieces with slicker and more muted tones still burst with energy. Coming out of Lyon, France, Nelio has graced walls across Europe, Australia, Asia, and South America in the 14 years he has been painting. He also has many installations in Wahaca, the suitably bustling and energetic Mexican street food restaurant in Convent Garden, London. To help develop his craft, Nelio enjoys collaborating with other street artists such as Zerozedrip, Quill, TBLR one and THTF. Much of the work is done through bombing. For Nelio, creeping round the streets and dodging security cameras is as much of the art as the paint. Nelio also brings together many artistic inspirations whilst never denying the real spirit and history of street art. Irreverent and gritty to keep the purists happy, his work importantly remains light, accessible and beautiful.
