Paul Binnie

b. 1967 • Scotish

Biography

Binnie is widely regarded as one of the most important artists working in the tradition of Japanese woodblock printmaking, having trained in Japan for over six years in the studio of a master carver and printer. Stylistically, we feel Binnie has taken up the mantel of the shin-hanga ('new print') artists of the early to mid-20th century. However, technically, Binnie self-carves and self-prints his work, which would suggest he belongs with the sosaku-hanga ('creative print') artists. We resolved the question by giving him his own section here. Institutions with Binnie works in their permanent collection: Ackland Art Museum, Chapel Hill, NC, USA Alloa Museum and Art Gallery, Alloa, Scotland, UK The British Museum Griffith Bequest, London, UK Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY, USA Bryn Mawr College, Bryn Mawr, PA, USA Carleton College, Northfield, MN, USA Edinburgh College of Art, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK Mead Art Museum, Amhest College, Amherst, MA, USA The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, USA Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, MN, USA Museum of Fine Arts, St Petersburg, FL, USA National Library of Australia, Canberra, Australia National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK Nihon no Hanga Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands PICTURE Art Foundation, California State University, Carson, CA, USA Rhode Island School of Design, Museum of Art, Providence, RI, USA Rijksmuseum Rijksprintenkabinet, Amsterdam, The Netherlands The Ringling Museum of Art, Sarasota, FL, USA Saint Louis Art Museum, St Louis, MO, USA Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo, OH, USA University of San Diego, San Diego, CA, USA
