Biography
Peter Lanyon was a prominent British painter born on February 8, 1918, in St Ives, Cornwall. He was a key figure in the St Ives School, a group of artists who were influential in the development of modern art in Britain. Lanyon's work is known for its unique blend of landscape painting and abstraction, often inspired by the dramatic coastline and landscapes of his native Cornwall. His paintings, while abstract, are deeply rooted in the physical and atmospheric qualities of specific places and his personal experiences within them. Lanyon was influenced by his interactions with artists such as Ben Nicholson and Naum Gabo, and later by American abstract expressionists. His notable works include 'Porthleven' (1951) and 'St Just' (1953). In 1959, Lanyon took up gliding, which profoundly influenced his later work, allowing him to explore themes of movement and space from a new aerial perspective. Tragically, Lanyon's life was cut short when he died in a gliding accident on August 31, 1964, at the age of 46. Despite his brief career, Lanyon's innovative approach to landscape painting has left a lasting impact, and his works continue to be celebrated and collected for their dynamic exploration of form and environment.
