Biography
The career of U.K. photographer Peter Mitchell (b. 1943) is one of deceptive quiescence. Although relatively unknown in the US, his impact on the development of color photography in the UK is akin to William Eggleston in the US. His solo exhibition, A New Refutation of the Viking 4 Space Mission at Impressions Gallery in 1979 was the first color photography exhibition in Britain by a British artist and made a lasting impression on the field. For the past 40 years, he has been quietly documenting the northern city of Leeds in West Yorkshire—where he continues to work and live— as it has transformed from an industrial and agricultural city to a modern urban metropolis. His photographs document the wonder of every day, while also investigating the ephemerality of objects and places as they transform over time. His work has appeared in three major solo-publications: Memento Mori: The Flats at Quarry Hill (1990), Strangely Familiar (2013) photographs from his 1979 exhibition at Impressions Gallery, and SOME THINGS mean EVERYTHING to SOMEBODY (2014).
