Sir Thomas Lawrence

1769 – 1830 • English

Biography

Sir Thomas Lawrence was a prominent English painter born on April 13, 1769, in Bristol. He was a child prodigy who began his artistic career in Devizes, where his father was an innkeeper. By the age of ten, Lawrence was already supporting his family with pastel portraits. He moved to London at eighteen and quickly established himself as a leading portrait painter in oils. His first royal commission was a portrait of Queen Charlotte in 1789. Lawrence's skill in capturing likenesses and his virtuoso handling of paint made him the most fashionable portrait painter in Europe by the time of his death on January 7, 1830. Lawrence became an associate of the Royal Academy in 1791, a full member in 1794, and served as its president from 1820. He was known for his Romantic style, particularly during the Regency period, and received patronage from the Prince Regent. Lawrence was commissioned to paint portraits of allied leaders for the Waterloo Chamber at Windsor Castle. Despite his professional success, Lawrence's personal life was marked by financial difficulties and tumultuous relationships. His reputation diminished during the Victorian era but has since been partially restored, and his works remain highly valued by collectors today.
