Susan Stillman
Many people experiencing the forced isolation of being home are awakening to the beauty that exists in their often-overlooked everyday environments. Artist Susan Stillman has made a lifelong exploration of these views in her own suburban Westchester. With dozens of small paintings from her series “Peripheral Visions” along with larger scale explorations on canvas, Stillman captures the ephemeral, homing in on moments when light changes the mundane into something magical. She likens her quest to capturing fireflies, something both elusive and fleeting. With early evening walks in her hilly neighborhood, she follows a familiar path always on the lookout for sudden explosions of color that the changing light brings forth. Stillman has been a faculty member at Parsons School of Design since 1983. She holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, an MFA from Brooklyn College, and spent a year in Rome studying painting with RISD’s European Honors Program. Starting her career as an Illustrator in NY, her work has been published in hundreds of magazines, newspapers, posters and books. Her clients have included The New York Times, New York Magazine, Conde Nast, Hearst Publications, and many others. Susan Stillman is well known for her vibrant representations of homes and properties in Westchester and surrounding areas through her business, Home Portraits, which has been featured in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, among others. Her paintings have been shown in numerous galleries, including shows at the Anderson Chase Gallery in Katonah, Northern Westchester Center for the Arts, Silvermine Gallery, The Painting Center, Equity Gallery, and various others in NYC and the surrounding region.
