About This Auction
Our Parisian Modern & Contemporary Discoveries sale returns this summer, from 30 June to 7 July. The auction will present a dynamic dialogue across artistic movements, spanning from Impressionism to Contemporary creation, and bringing together a refined selection of established artists alongside new discoveries, including works from the former Claude and Georges Pompidou Collection. In 1964, while serving as Prime Minister, Georges Pompidou asked his ministers for a single New Year’s gift: a painting by Georges Mathieu. Sotheby’s is honored to present this very work, offered along with a curated selection from the former collection of Claude and Georges Pompidou. Together, they form the portrait of a couple profoundly devoted to culture in all its forms, revealing the intimate dialogue they maintained with their era. Georges Pompidou’s relationship with art began early, with the acquisition at eighteen of Max Ernst’s La Femme 100 têtes. Over the following decades, he and Claude assembled a deeply personal collection guided by emotion, intellect, and a sustained dialogue with the artists of their time. The Pompidous lived with art intimately, visiting Hartung and Vieira da Silva in Antibes, Soulages in Sète, and maintaining close ties with Sonia Delaunay. Their holdings reflect their taste, open and modern: from lyrical abstraction and the School of Paris to the Nouveaux Réalistes and kinetic art, with works by Hartung, Vieira da Silva, Soulages, Klein, Vasarely, and Cruz‑Diez. Celebrated in exhibitions at Galerie Artcurial, Carjac, the Jeu de Paume, and Chambord, the collection now enters a new chapter with the offering at Sotheby’s of a selection of emblematic works that define what we may call the “goût Pompidou”.
