Maho Kubota Gallery
Situated on a narrow street between upscale Gaien-nishi Dori street and a historical slope that dates back to medieval Tokyo, MAHO KUBOTA GALLERY opened in March 2016, specializing in contemporary art. The gallery space is located in Jingumae, an area of cultural crossover where Harujuku and Aoyama overlap. The location ensures easy access from anywhere in Central Tokyo. Including seventeen years of experience as director at SCAI THE BATHHOUSE, one of Japan’s leading galleries, founder Maho Kubota who has made her gallery’s mission to represent outstanding artists with a focus on emerging talent, as well as to seek out and re-evaluate artistic talent that is undiscovered or has yet to take center stage in the international art world. At the same time the gallery throws light on the artistic representations which comes from universality of the collective unconscious that bridges the practice of Western and Japanese art today. In its first year, the Gallery presented five exhibitions, including shows of Yurie Nagashima (b.1973 ) , who has dealt with gender issues since the 1990s, exerting a major influence on Japanese contemporary photography, Noriko Ambe (b.1967 ), whose unique approaches on hand-cut paper sculpture is internationally acclaimed, and Julian Opie, (b. 1958), an established British artist to present his new paintings and video works. In its second year, the gallery's activity has grown even more actively with seven remarkable exhibitions, showing both the young and mid-career artists from Japan and USA . Besides its general programs, the gallery has started to see more focus in the significance to present feminist art in the wider context, throwing light on the rich tradition of women artists' practices in Japan.
