Adam Parker Smith
Biography
Adam Parker Smith’s work walks a fine line between a polished pop culture aesthetic, embattled with frequent tones of satire, executed through his skilled use of altered and fabricated components that often appear to be readily found objects. Adam Parker Smith once said, “I feel like so many of my ideas start out as jokes, for better or worse.” Well known for his tongue-in-cheek creative practice, Parker Smith finds inspiration for his irreverently funny works from his personal fears, longings, obsessions, crushes, and causes of jealousy. Simultaneously, however, he has been known to simply buy ideas for his art practice from his friends. The sculptures exemplifies Parker Smith’s creative and playful investigation of a long history of art and traditional creative practices. Adam Parker Smith attended the University of Santa Cruz, Tyler School of Art, Temple University, and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. His work has been shown throughout the United States and internationally in galleries and museums including Urbris, Manchester, England; Zidoun-Bossuyt Gallery, Luxembourg; The Brooklyn Museum, New York; The Hole, New York; Honor Fraser, Los Angeles; Parisian Laundry, Montreal; Galerie Sho Contemporary, Tokyo; The Times Museum, Guangzhou, China; and Maraya Art Centre, Sharjah, UAE. His work has been featured inside the pages of the New York Times, Art World, Art in America, Beautiful Decay, Fiber Arts, The Village Voice and White Wall Magazine.
