Boyle Family

1934 – 2005 • Scottish

Biography

The Boyle Family is a Scottish artist collective known for their innovative multimedia works and Earth studies. Founded by Mark Boyle, who was born in Glasgow in 1934 and passed away in 2005, the collective also includes Joan Hills and their children, Sebastian and Georgia. The group gained prominence in the cultural UK Underground scene of the 1960s and became widely recognized for their meticulous recreations of randomly selected areas of the Earth's surface. These works, which blur the lines between painting and sculpture, involve detailed casts made from resin, fiberglass, and materials collected from the original sites. Boyle Family's work has been exhibited internationally, including at the British Pavilion at the 1978 Venice Biennale and a major retrospective at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in 2003. In addition to their Earth studies, the collective is noted for pioneering liquid light shows in the 1960s, which were integral to the counter-culture movement and accompanied performances by artists like Jimi Hendrix. Their innovative techniques and collaborative approach have made their work highly collectible and influential in the contemporary art world.
