Brid is a painter whose works on canvas are primarily abstract and semi-abstract. Her paintings have an enigmatic meditative quality and her use of color has been described as bold and full of vitality. She works mainly in a series format with some one-off pieces and views her work as a study of color and form on a variety of subjects from the minutiae of everyday life, to the play of light in the landscape of the West of Ireland. Daily walks have been a source of inspiration in her work for several years now and are an integral part of her artistic practice, one which is conducive to a reflective study of natural forms, and a meditation for the senses on light and movement through the passage of the seasons. An appreciation for the Japanese aesthetic enables her to find a subject matter, the small and seemingly insignificant objects of daily life. Brid is an honors graduate with a major in painting from Emily Carr University of Art & Design, Vancouver Canada. Influences are evident in her work from the palette of the Pacific Northwest where she lived for seven years, and from her life of thirteen years in Japan. Returning to live on the northwest coast of Ireland in 2000 her work incorporates those varied influences and displays a distinctive and unique style Works on paper include collage, pastels, charcoal, watercolors, ink and graphite drawings. The influence of calligraphy from her life in Japan is evident both in her understanding of space within the canvas and in her use of Sumi brushwork mixed with conventional painting mediums. Works to date have been exhibited in Canada, Japan, and Ireland.
