Chelsea Cater
Biography
Born in Hilo, Hawaiʻi and raised in Santa Cruz, California, Chelsea Cater lives and works in Brooklyn, New York with frequent excursions to the Hudson Valley. She received her BA in Studio Art from Vassar College in 2013, and attended the Slade School of Art at University College London as an affiliate student in 2012. Exhibited widely across New York City and the Hudson Valley, her work considers the shifts in perception and psychology one experiences in natural and urban environments. Most recently, she completed a selection of paintings, works on paper, and writings for a solo exhibition entitled lightning talk at 6BASE in the Bronx. In 2017, she received the Orange County NY Arts Council Newburgh Relocation Grant and attended Otis College of Art and Design’s inaugural LA Summer Residency. That same year, she also co-founded CPR Gallery & Projects, a curatorial collective which promotes underrepresented artists through exhibitions, workshops, and other programming. Cater will be working in residence at What Lab Studio in Vancouver, Canada and at the Catwalk Institute in Catskill, New York later in 2019.
