Cynthia Ellis
Born 1954
Cynthia Ellis is a painter who resides and practices in Perth since arriving in Western Australia November 1983. Ellis’ painting practice is central to the material of oil paint. The paintings are constructed with thickly textural applications of oil paint onto traditional surfaces such as stretched linen, wood and sometimes more contemporary modes such as found objects and built structures. The oil paint reflects a process relating to the particulars of material and physical interaction alluding to responses, which convey esoteric notions understood by the viewer. Her works are represented by major institutions such as Lawrence Wilson, The Art Gallery of Western Australia, SCM and private collectors such as Ian and Pat Flanagan, Cruthers Collection (currently housed with Lawrence Wilson Gallery) and numerous others.
