Dain, born and raised in Brooklyn, has become one of the most influential street artists to emerge from New York. Combining black and white photos of old Hollywood glamour and the bright, intense colors of graffiti, he creates paintings that are striking and unique. Often working on the street and in the studio, Dain combines silkscreening, acrylic, collage, wheat-pasting and spray paint. Crossing genres, he begins with portraits of classic Hollywood glamour stars of the 1940s and 50s that he collages on to neon-bright spray painted backgrounds. He continues to add advertisements, logos and other images along with acrylic and spray paint as he works the painting. His final and most distinguishing mark is the “circle and drip” of red around a single eye of the main subject. Dain views his work as a confrontation between the destructive gestures of graffiti and the femininity of his Hollywood subjects.
