Deborah Druick
Deborah Druick is a Bronx-based painter born in Montreal. Druick’s work can best be described as belonging to the style of the “New Surrealist Movement” using a new visual language to express the objectification of women’s bodies. Her work addresses issues of gender definition, self-identification and female objectification, using stylized figuration and saturated high-key color. She emphasizes and exaggerates stereotypical concepts of precision, perfection and beauty in femininity. The uncanny and the impossible reign in her work as the status quo holds little allure. “Deborah Druick’s gothic dramedies are delightful novellas about self ... Druick tells her Surrealist stories using gestural poses of hands, legs, feet and hair. The lack of face allows the spectator to focus on these parts which in Western society are glamorized and primped to hide their natural form. In Druick’s work the subject of her desires end up looking akin to house plants; alive but meant only for the purpose of beautification.” -- Stephanie Young Editor, Vellum Magazine No. 22, May 2019. Deborah Druick has participated in Group Shows at The Bridgehampton Museum, The Katonah Art Museum, Select Art Fair Miami, Saatchi, The Other Art Fair, The Clio Art Fair, The Viridian Gallery, and Site: Brooklyn. She has had a solo show of her work at Red Dog Studio, Hong Kong.
