Dirk Filarski

1885 – 1964

Biography

Dutch painter Dirk Filarski was born in 1885 in Amsterdam and was raised there as well. From 1905 to 1906 Filarski was called out to perform obligatory military service and after that period he moved to Bergen. His name, together with that of Arnout Colnot, is often connected to the Bergen School. In his work we see a preference for landscapes of which he painted a great number while travelling through Europe and North-Africa. Initially Filarski was known to paint with lighter colours but after 1910 he turned to darker shades as brown and green. His work gained an air of power and expressionism. Still lifes and images of flowers in grey and brightly contrasting colours are also known of his hand.
