Do Hoang Tuong
Born 1960 • Vietnam
DO HOANG TUONG Do Hoang Tuong (b. 1960) from Quang Nam, moved to Saigon in 1970. Tuong is one of the most prominent contemporary figurative artist of Vietnam. He attended Saigon College of Fine Art in 1976 and then Hochiminh University of Fine Art in 1979. One of his most important and well received exhibitions was in 1988, becoming his stepping stone of his art career. In 1988 and 1989, following his senior artist Nguyen Trung, Tuong was inspired by nouveau art and participated in the young artists group. This marks the very exciting period of Vietnamese art history. In 2004 and 2007, Tuong has solo exhibitions of figurative paintings, S/he, and 12 women. In 2017, Tuong participated in group exhibition "Vietnam in Venice" with other 4 fellow artists in Venezia, Italy during the Venice Biennale 2017. Currently, Tuong is living and working in Hochiminh City. ARTIST CV DO HOANG TUONG “I create a figure on the canvas, then I start the fighting against him. I try my best to beat him, to uncover things that are hidden deep inside his body, inside his mind or at the bottom of his heart. This hurts him, but it gives me a feeling of safety and comfort.” - Do Hoang Tuong Do Hoang Tuong (b. 1960) is one of the most prominent contemporary figurative artist of Vietnam. He enrolled in the art college in 1976. Then he became an art teacher and taught anatomy during 1984 to 1991. Also an accomplished illustrator, Do Hoang Tuong returned to figurative works in 2004, after a period of non-figurative and non-representational works done over one decade. The S/he series in 2004 marked the beginning of new figurative work. In the subsequent 12 Women series, the artist painted women in bodily contortions which would have been impossible in physiological term. As an anatomy lecturer, Do Hoang Tuong knew exactly the physiological boundaries that he wanted to subtly trespassed, so as to formulate a commentary on the status of women, a suffrage seemingly natural but physically torturous.
