Domingo Zapata is a contemporary American-Spanish artist whose colorful Neo-Expressionist paintings and sculptures address themes of sexuality and opulence. Known as much for his lifestyle and personality as his Warhol-like aesthetic, Zapata has been romantically linked with celebrities like Lindsay Lohan. “One of my favorite things to do is to study and understand works by masters, and do a contemporary take on them,” he has explained. “I admire the originals, but imagine what would happen to them if they were on the streets of New York.” Born on December 22, 1974 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, he moved to London where he studied at the Regents College, the American University in Washington, D.C., and moved to New York in 1999. In New York, he worked on Wall Street and in the music industry before committing himself fully to a career in art. More recently, the artist has made a successful foray into fashion, as seen in his collaboration with Alice + Olivia. Notably, in 2017 the artist debuted a fall/winter fashion collection, presenting a range of apparel that embodied his signature aesthetic of lively patterns and forms. Zapata currently lives and works in New York, NY.
