Biography

Emily Shanahan's practice addresses issues of gendered labor, power, and technology. She explores how behaviors, gestures, societal norms, and interpersonal transactions are embodied, circulated, and coded though historical and contemporary media systems. Her materials are culled from a variety of sources: print advertisements, television commercials, online content, marketing copy, stock photography, and mass- produced objects, among others. Emily Shanahan received her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 2013. Recent exhibitions include Public Event at Artists Space, NY, as part of the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program, and Soft Skills at The James Gallery, CUNY Graduate Center. Emily was an artist-in-residence at the Vermont Studio Center in 2010 and a selected participant in the New Museum Seminars in 2016. Her artist book The Tick vs. the Hum was published by Golden Spike Press in 2015 and is held in the Whitney Museum Library Collection.
