Fiona Aboud
Biography
Fiona Aboud (b. 1976, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; lives and works in New York, NY) makes photographs, installations, and performances that draw on art history, anthropology, and the natural world to create a contemporary vision of identity, beauty, and perception. Blurring the distinction between object and subject, concrete and abstract, real and surreal, Aboud constructs complex portraits, to examine how identity and perception are created in the mind's eye and through the lens of popular culture. Water—one of the artist's signature material and a symbol of femininity and change—serves as an added layer of meaning and a metaphor for the challenges of getting to the truth of our emotions and desires. Aboud has drawn inspiration from multiple artistic periods and cultural influences throughout Western and South American art history, particularly the Surrealist Photographers Man Ray, Dora Maar, and Florence Henri. Aboud received a BA from Columbia University in 1999. Aboud's work is in numerous international public and private collections, including The Rio Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; The Microsoft Collection, Seattle, Washington; The Library of Congress, Washington, DC. Solo Exhibitions of her work have been organized at the NYC Mayor's Office (2010), the Library of Congress (2009), Cascadia College, Bothell, WA. Select group exhibitions featuring her work include Captain Sikh America, Wing Luke Museum, Seattle, WA (2019), BOROUGH5, Black Diamond Gallery Brooklyn, NY (2018), Reflective Pool, Curated by Heather Zises, The Cluster Gallery, Brooklyn, NY (2018).
