Franz Graf
Born 1954
Franz Graf (born in 1954) pursues traces and sets signs. His primary concept is based on the linkage and overlapping of various media and material, like abstract, ornamental, and figurative drawings, found pieces of literary text, individual letters and words, concrete illustrations of reality with the camera, and found objects that lead to a new open structure in the work, where motivic definition vary widely. From a neo-conceptualist perspective, Franz Graf develops chains of abstraction and association where elements are used from the past to complement memory and the evaluation of the present and appeal to subconscious processes. Franz Graf has had solo exhibitions at Frankfurter Kunstverein (1979), Neue Galerie am Landesmuseum Joanneum, Graz (1990), at Vienna’s Secession (1995), Bonner Kunstverein (1995), Salzburg’s Rupertinum (2001) and at MAK, Vienna (2009). In 2007 he realized a floor design in the entryway to Salzburg’s Mozarteum at Mirabellplatz as part of an art in architecture program.
