Biography

Harry Benson is a Scottish photojournalist renowned for his images of The Beatles, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the Civil Rights Movement. Benson’s works have appeared in publications such as LIFE, Vanity Fair, Time, Esquire, and The New Yorker. “A good photograph is one that can't be repeated,” he has explained. Born on December 2, 1929 in Glasgow, United Kingdom, he was assigned to travel with The Beatles on their inaugural tour of America in 1964. This assignment effectively launched his career, allowing him access to celebrities such as Michael Jackson, Bobby Fischer, and Amy Winehouse. Over the years that followed, Benson has received a number of awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Scottish Press Photography Awards in April 2006, an Honorary Fellowship of The Royal Photographic Society in 2009, and an appointment as Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2009. In 2016, the documentary Harry Benson: Shoot First, a chronicle of his career to date, was released by Magnolia Pictures. He currently lives and works between New York, NY and Palm Beach, FL. Today, Benson’s photographs are held in the collections of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh and the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.
