Helen Altman was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in 1958 and currently lives and works in Fort Worth, Texas. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa as well as a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Texas, Denton, Texas. Her work has been exhibited at the Glassell School of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, Beaumont; the Tyler Museum of Art, Tyler; The Old Jail Art Center, Albany; the Grace Museum, Abilene; the Longview Museum of Fine Art; Longview; and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. Her work has also been exhibited at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston; the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; the Galveston Arts Center; the Museum of Arts and Design, New York; and the Chelsea Art Museum, New York, amongst other venues. Her work is part of the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Houston Airport System, City of Houston; the University of Houston; the Art Museum of Southeast Texas; the Art Museum of South Texas; the Dallas Museum of Art; the Federal Reserve Bank, Houston; the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art; the University of Alabama; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego.
