Hiroshi Sugito had spent early years of his life in New York and studied Japanese Painting after coming back to Japan. As one of the most important artists who start to explore the new figurative paintings in Japan in the 90’s, Sugito’ s work always bridges the gap between abstract and concrete. His paintings invite the viewers to his unique pictorial space and introduce the sense of rhythm between colors and shapes that evokes physical sensations like inhaling and exhaling, or humming a song. Known for the exquisite sense of colors and motifs which the viewers feel easy to connect with, Sugito’s artworks often evoke the narrations of certain storyline.This unique sense of representation originated from Sugito’s knowledges and techniques of Japanese painting and it stands out in a formation of colors and shapes, the pure elements of a painting. Sugito’s works have been exhibited internationally including New York, Los Angels, Berlin, London and domestically in Japan. Many public collections including San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo have acquired his works into their collections. In 2015, he held 2 major museum solo exhibitions at Musée Bernard Buffet, Shizuoka and The Miyagi Museum of Art, Miyagi. This year, he will have a solo exhibition at Toyota Municipal Museum of Art.
