Biography
Hugh C. Robertson (1845–1908) was a pioneering American studio potter known for his innovative work with ceramic glazes. Born in England, Robertson moved to the United States and began his career in ceramics at the Jersey City Potter in 1860. He later joined his father's pottery business in Chelsea, Massachusetts, which evolved into the Chelsea Keramic Art Works (CKAW). Robertson's work at CKAW was marked by his development of Chelsea faience, an underglazed opaque earthenware, and his experimentation with the Chinese sang de boeuf glaze, which he successfully reproduced in 1888. Robertson's contributions were significant to the Arts and Crafts and Art Pottery movements in America. After the closure of CKAW in 1889 due to financial difficulties, Robertson re-entered the pottery scene by founding Chelsea Pottery, US in Dedham, Massachusetts, and later the Dedham Pottery Company in 1895. Dedham Pottery became renowned for its high-fire stoneware and distinctive crackle glaze. Robertson's work is highly regarded for its artistic innovation and technical mastery, making it a sought-after collectible among enthusiasts of American art pottery.
