Jean Bazaine

Jean René Bazaine, painter, designer of stained glass windows and writer, was born on December 21, 1904 in Paris, France. Bazaine studied sculpture at the Académie Julian after a brief passage at the École des Beaux-Arts. He also studied philosophy and literature at the Sorbonne in Paris. He obtained certificates in art history and philosophy in 1925. Bazaine's work was first shown in company wtih Jean Fautrier, Edouard Goerg and Marcel Gromaire at the Galerie Jeanne Castel in Paris in 1930. His first individual show was in Galerie Van Leer in Paris in 1932. After being demobilized from the army in 1941, Bazaine orgainzed an avant-garde show at the Galerie Braun Paris called, "Vingt Jeunes Peintres de Tradition Française." In 1949 and 1950 he had his first major one man show at the Galerie Maeght, and from there followed exhibitions: a retropective exhibition in Galerie Maeght, Musée Matisse in 1988, and the Exposition Bazaine in the Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais in Paris in 1990. Jean René Bazaine died on March 4, 2001 in Clamart.
