Jennifer Riddle

Biography

Jennifer Riddle's commitment to painting is driven by the pastoral land and sea that surrounds her on Victoria’s beautiful Mornington Peninsula. The low ambient Southern light from this region is captured in Riddle’s work with her sublime shrouds that soften and filter the clarity from the land. It’s the subtle and evocative nature of this light that Riddle has characterized and encapsulated within her work. Drawing on the values ascribed to Nature as described by the great Romantic landscape artists of the nineteenth century, Riddle maintains that there’s a deep, emotional element connecting Man with Nature. In essence, Riddle’s aim is to heighten one’s love and emotion for the natural world. It’s within her personal relationship with the land that she is able to convey the lyrical charm and beauty that one feels in its presence. ‘Natures ability to heighten the senses has long been my motivation to paint. From empirical observation, I’ve explored my emotional connection with the pastoral land and the everchanging climatic elements that enrich the Southern landscape. Rain, fog and mist gently obscure the horizons, veil the valleys and dissolve the trees in its path. The vistas are transformed in a poetic fusion between the land and the sky, offering a place of spiritual refuge, solace, and tranquillity. My quest is intuitive, a yearning from the heart that manifests itself into a much-needed expression.’ - Jennifer Riddle
