Biography
John M Armleder is a Swiss performance artist, painter, sculptor, critic, and curator working in Geneva and New York. Internationally recognized, the work of John Armleder explores the transformation of the status of the work of art at the level of its perception and of its reception. His work is based on his involvement with Fluxus in the 1960s and 1970s when he created performance art pieces, installations, and collective art activities. Since the 1990s, he has created installations, paintings, wall paintings, sculptures and what he calls “Furniture Sculptures”. He often uses a dense scenographic installation style, placing individual works in close proximity and relationships with each other. Armleder has had numerous solo museum exhibitions in the USA and Europe, most notably at The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (2008), MAMCO Geneva (2006), the ICA Pennsylvania (2006) and the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2000). His work features in significant international collections, including the Musée d´Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Centre Pompidou, Paris; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Kunstmuseum, Basel; Kunstmuseum, Zurich; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Sammlung Ludwig, Vienna and Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart.
