Biography

John is one of the most innovative and intellectual sculptors of the postmodern era. He explores complicated materials, constructions and techniques with the motivation of an Einstein mixed with the brilliant alchemy of idea and creation. All of the sculptures in this show were cast in urethane resin. I was fascinated to learn that their subtle and sensuous colors derive not from the paint tube but rather from the resin and other industrial materials. The colors can range within a single sculpture from dense, coal-like blacks to wax-bean yellows to a whitishness that is nearly transparent, like a patch of ice. Some of the pieces are coated in what appears to be a mossy green patina –which, Duff explained to me, has nothing to do with bronze and everything to do with Turtle car wax, which the artist uses liberally in the casting process. Since 2006, John has been honored with over 18 One Man exhibitions in prestigious galleries in the U.S. as well as 23 group exhibitions.
